How to Use a Carpet Sweeper Properly
Long before the invention of the vacuum cleaner, people cleaned their carpets with carpet sweepers. Though not quite as commonplace today, these devices are still in use in many residential and commercial settings. Their small, lightweight size makes them ideal for small jobs or quick cleanups. Carpet sweepers also make very little noise, which makes them perfect when you need to clean your carpet while others are present. Understanding how they work makes it easier to use them more effectively.
The construction of a carpet sweeper consists of a small box which encases rollers and brushes that are connected by either belts or gears. Inside the box is a container for dirt, similar to a dustpan.
As the sweeper is pushed along the carpet, the rollers spin and the brushes sweep the dirt into the internal container. Many modern sweepers can be adjusted to accommodate various heights of carpeting. A long handle allows the user to push the sweeper effortlessly, without having to bend or stoop over.
To use a carpet sweeper, simply push the unit over the debris you wish to collect. Push it forward and pull it backward over the area in overlapping strokes, and the dirt will be swept up into the container. The dust collection container should be emptied regularly to prevent overflow.
Before using the sweeper, remove any large pieces of debris too big for the sweeper to handle. Make sure electrical cords and other items which could become entangled in the rollers are not lying in the path of the sweeper.
